Today is Sunday, and we just checked into our rooms at the Courtyard
Marriott in Homestead, Florida. We left Fort Myers around 9 this
morning, and we just landed. From a swing through Big Cypress--which was
not a swamp this time--and then through Everglades National Park, it's
been a long day of travel.
What I didn't tell you
about our excursions in Fort Myers and Ding Darling were some of the
wildlife we captured in photos. We never thought we would see river
otters, but we DID! There were 3 of them crossing the road--one at a
time, looking for traffic before crossing. Joe and I both caught some
shots of them. They are larger than we thought. We will be uploading
photos soon, but we haven't downloaded them from my camera yet.
Today
was rather unremarkable, believe it or not! We couldn't believe
it...Big Cypress Swamp looked like someone drained it! How
disappointing...We saw a few small gators near the road, but that's all.
Then we stopped at a small pullout that is known for its black headed
vultures. There they were busy fledging their young. The adults were
swooping very low overhead, tempting and encouraging the youngsters to
follow them. It was quite a show! We got some excellent shots of them!
They are totally unafraid of humans.
I'm hoping to
have some photos for you tomorrow, but tonight, I am thoroughly
exhausted. I rode in the rear of the van all day, not able to see much
of anything. So it was very tiring. I'm looking forward to going down to
Key West tomorrow. I'm sure that there will be some awesome shots from
there and everywhere in between! More later.
